WHO places great emphasis on education. High-quality medical translation is essential for its success all over the world. In 2013–2014, Russian Translation Company (RPK) translated several booklets for the WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. WHO experts were impressed with the quality, and today we work regularly with WHO offices in Germany, Denmark, Kazakhstan, and Switzerland. We translate conference materials, scientific articles, awareness-raising booklets, website texts and routine documents.

WHO staff like to get the full package of services. In addition to translation, they often ask us to perform graphic design, desktop publishing and printing. RPK also provides interpretation at various events:
  • Conferences on public health
  • Workshops for medical professionals
  • Online courses in Chemical Safety and other subjects
  • Lab visits
Ending TB

In 2017, Moscow hosted the first WHO Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Tuberculosis in the Sustainable Development Era: A Multisectoral Response. Over 1000 delegates from 120 countries attended the event. Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an opening address.

Sixty interpreters worked at the three-day conference, enabling communication across all six official languages of the United Nations: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. In addition to simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, RPK provided an English-speaking announcer and bilingual assistants for officials.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It seeks to improve the health of the population across the globe. WHO develops and disseminates recommendations, standards and technologies in healthcare.
Public Health Panorama

Our attention to detail and knowledge of typographical standards has proved to be a valuable asset for WHO. For several years, RPK proofread the Russian version of the now-defunct Public Health Panorama, a journal published by the WHO Regional Office for Europe. The journal contained scientific articles, interviews, book reviews, case studies, etc.

RPK was responsible for checking the layout of the journal, correcting any errors and typos. The editorial board was also keen to know the opinion of our literary editors. Some of the texts were translated by our staff. WHO has its own style guide that differs from that of the UN, meaning that our editors and proofreaders had to be extra careful.

COVID-19 pandemic

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the demand for urgent translation of medical texts. Russian Translation Company was selected to translate WHO materials on coronavirus into Russian. Some of the texts were intended for medical professionals and officials in the healthcare system, while others were aimed at the general public. That’s why we had to use both translators and editors with a degree in Medicine and those who had a knack for explaining complex things in plain language.

Despite having to work under pressure, we were happy to do our bit, however small, in the fight against this global problem. And we were very proud to see that the Russian version of the website was updated quickly.
